I love celebrating this holiday. Over the next week I’ll share several new recipes, but for now let’s get prepared. These are the items I use to make the big meal happen. Thanksgiving cooking is familiar and comforting for me — no new recipe testing, no photography — and because I cook for a living, the meal comes together easily. I’ve tried countless kitchen gadgets and only recommend what I actually use and trust.

I strongly suggest ordering or gathering these items now so you’re not scrambling the day before or the morning of when things sell out. As I compiled this list I replaced items I needed to restock. I also plan and prep across the entire week leading up to Thanksgiving, which makes the day itself much less stressful. Many of the tools below help me follow that timeline with ease.

Classic Recipes – A Traditional Thanksgiving

My complete Thanksgiving recipe guide is available if you want more ideas, but here are a few traditional favorites I always make. These are reliable classics worth adding to your menu.

Turkey stock — I make this every year for gravy; it elevates the flavor.

Butter and white wine roasted turkey — for a golden, flavorful bird.

Grilled or smoked turkey — we often prepare a second turkey on the grill or smoker for added flavor and convenience.

The best stuffing — a must for a classic Thanksgiving spread.

Rich mashed potatoes — smooth, buttery, and perfect next to gravy.

Sweet potato casserole — a comforting, slightly sweet side dish.

Parker House rolls — soft, buttery rolls everyone loves.

Vanilla bourbon cranberry sauce — a bright, boozy twist on a classic condiment.

Honeycrisp harvest salad — a fresh salad to balance the richness of the meal.

Pumpkin dream cake or pumpkin cupcakes with espresso frosting — great dessert options for pumpkin lovers.

Apple cider sangria — a festive, seasonal drink for entertaining.

My Thanksgiving Kitchen Essentials

Practically everything in my kitchen gets used during Thanksgiving and the week before, but these are the items I can’t live without. Each item below is personally tested and instrumental in getting the meal on the table.

  • Stainless steel roasting pan — a high-quality, affordable workhorse for roasting the turkey.
  • Decorative roasting pan (favorite piece) — beautiful enough to serve from and sturdy enough for roasting and making gravy.
  • Mixing bowls — essential for prepping sides, sauces, and more.
  • Kitchen shears — indispensable for prepping the turkey and trimming herbs or produce.
  • Sharp knives — a reliable set makes carving and prep faster and safer.
  • Cheesecloth — useful for basting techniques and keeping flavors concentrated on the turkey for crisp skin.
  • Kitchen twine — necessary for trussing the bird and tying herbs.
  • Basting brush — have a few on hand for glazing and basting.
  • Turkey baster — handy for moistening the bird during roasting.
  • Meat thermometer — essential for cooking the turkey safely and perfectly.
  • Turkey lifters — make transferring a hot, heavy bird from pan to platter much easier.
  • Electric carving knife — speeds up carving when you’re handling more than one bird.
  • Carving board — a sturdy, attractive board makes carving easier and neater.
  • Large serving platter — for presenting the turkey or main course.
  • Fat separator cup — makes skimmed, clear gravy quickly and easily.
  • Shaker bottle — useful for making emulsions and smoothing gravies.
  • Whisks — have at least two for gravy and sauces.
  • Gravy boat — a must-have for serving gravy; consider a version with a warming base for larger gatherings.

  • Baking sheets — for roasting vegetables, baking rolls, and catching drips from the bird.
  • Multiple saucepans — useful for melting butter, simmering sauces, and making sides like cranberry sauce.
  • Multiple casserole dishes — for sides and baked dishes; a square dish is helpful for certain recipes.
  • Hand mixer — helpful for whipping mashed potatoes to the right texture without overworking them.
  • Potato masher or ricer — choose a ricer for the silkiest mashed potatoes.
  • Large strainer — for draining potatoes and rinsing produce.
  • Mandoline — great for evenly slicing vegetables for scalloped potatoes and other dishes.
  • Vegetable peeler — a reliable, comfortable peeler saves time.
  • Heavy-duty pot holders — the turkey and pans are heavy and hot; protect your hands.
  • Pie plate — for pies and can double as a serving dish when needed.
  • Rolling pin — for pie dough and other pastry tasks.
  • Drink dispenser — useful for sangria or punch; a pretty dispenser is festive for holiday gatherings.
