Spicy Blood Orange Beergarita Recipe for Summer Cocktails

Since I love making things more interesting, I stuck a beer in a margarita.

Beergaritas? Yes, please. Blood orange beergaritas? Absolutely.

Beergaritas aren’t new on this site — I’ve made regular blood orange margaritas before, and other variations like key lime beergaritas and ginger beergaritas (the ginger version uses ginger beer instead of conventional beer). If you choose a beer you enjoy, these are fantastic.

I tried the mix made with frozen limeade and sour mix, but I’m not a fan of sours, so I developed my own version.

We tested two versions: one paired with Corona and one with a blood orange ale. I was excited about the blood orange ale, but the beer itself didn’t fully match my expectations — I was hoping for something soda-like, which it wasn’t. Still, it worked well in the cocktail. I personally prefer Corona because it’s the beer I usually reach for, and its light, citrusy profile complements the blood orange and lime perfectly.

Don’t worry about the bottle overflowing when you insert it into the cocktail — it won’t. The carbonation and air flow work out fine.

The small Corona bottles are ideal for this presentation. If you can’t find them and use a larger bottle, it’s a little awkward because you’ll need to hold both the glass and the beer, unless you pour it into a tall glass and fill only halfway.

For gatherings — like Super Bowl parties — I included a pitcher recipe so you can mix everything together ahead of time without the bottle-in-glass trick. Just stir the ingredients in a pitcher and serve.

I’m a little obsessed with blood oranges, which explains the recent flurry of blood orange recipes. They’re seasonal and fleeting, and I always want to use them while they’re available. This season’s fruit hasn’t been my best, so I’ve been savoring what I can find.

The spicy element comes from a rim of coarse salt mixed with cayenne pepper, and you can add a tiny pinch of cayenne to the shaker for extra heat. The combination of cayenne, orange and beer has a michelada-like quality that’s irresistible, especially served alongside chips, guacamole and tacos.

For Super Bowl or any party, build a big snack board, include a few dips, toss in a salad, maybe slow-cook some pulled pork, and don’t forget the beergaritas.

  • 1 ½ ounces silver tequila
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice

  • lime wedges for garnish

for a pitcher

  • 1 cup freshly squeezed blood orange juice
  • 1 cup beersuch as Corona or a citrus-forward beer
  • 1/3 to ½ cup silver tequila
  • 1/2 cup fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup Grand Marnier or triple secGrand Marnier preferred
  • 1/4 cup simple syrup
  • fresh blood oranges for garnish
  • fresh limes for garnish
  • coarse salt and cayenne for rims

Instructions

  • I recommend making one serving first and tasting it so you can adjust the tequila, syrup or lime to your preference. Everyone likes drinks a little differently.
  • Rim the glass with a lime wedge, then press the edge into a mixture of coarse salt and cayenne. Fill the glass with a few ice cubes or crushed ice.
  • In a shaker, combine the blood orange juice, tequila, lime juice, Grand Marnier and simple syrup. Add a pinch of cayenne if you want extra heat. Shake well for 30 seconds, then pour over the ice, leaving about an inch of space at the top. Quickly insert the beer bottle into the drink and garnish with lime and blood orange wedges.

for a pitcher

  • Combine the blood orange juice, beer, tequila, Grand Marnier and simple syrup in a pitcher and stir until blended. Serve over ice with salt-and-cayenne-rimmed glasses and garnish as desired.
