Grilled Hot Honey BBQ Smoked Sausage Skewers Recipe

These grilled smoked sausage skewers are a simple, flavorful weeknight dinner the whole family will enjoy. Smoked turkey sausage, bell peppers and red onion are brushed with a hot honey BBQ sauce and grilled until nicely charred — sweet, smoky and satisfying.

The combination of smoked turkey sausage, peppers and onions is a reliable favorite. I usually use smoked turkey sausage, but any smoked sausage will work. The ingredients are sliced into similar-sized pieces so they cook evenly on the skewers.

We often make some version of sausage with peppers and onions — roasted on a sheet pan or cooked with potatoes in a skillet — because it’s fast and reliable. This grilled skewer version is especially fun when the weather turns warm and the grill comes out.

A very easy method

This is more method than strict recipe. Slice smoked turkey sausage into roughly 1-inch pieces. Chop bell peppers and red onion into pieces about the same size so everything threads neatly on the skewers.

Whisk together your favorite BBQ sauce with hot honey and brush it over the assembled skewers before grilling. Grill over high heat for about 10–12 minutes, turning every few minutes to get even char. Finish with an extra brush of sauce if you like and sprinkle with fresh chopped cilantro.

Serve the skewers over rice, toss the pieces into a summer orzo or couscous salad, or simply plate them as-is. Leftovers are great removed from the skewers and packed for lunch.

Ingredients

  • 13 ounces smoked turkey sausage
  • 3 bell peppers, chopped into pieces
  • 1 red onion, chopped into pieces
  • kosher salt and pepper
  • ¼ cup your favorite BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hot honey
  • chopped fresh cilantro, for serving
  • rice, for serving

Instructions 

  • Preheat your grill to high.
  • Cut the turkey sausage into roughly 1-inch pieces to match the size of the peppers and onions.
  • Thread sausage, peppers and onion onto skewers. I typically use 4–5 sausage pieces per skewer and alternate with vegetables.
  • Whisk together the BBQ sauce and hot honey, then brush the mixture all over the skewers.
  • Grill the skewers for 10–12 minutes, rotating every 2–3 minutes for even charring. Brush with extra sauce if desired before serving.
  • Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve over rice.
