This season is full of jewel tones and cozy flavors. I’m endlessly excited about fall—apples, squash (including pumpkin), and pomegranate are three of my favorite signs that the season has arrived.

Apples: I want them in everything—the spices, the cider, the crisp sweet-tart flavor. Squash and pumpkin: they each bring a comforting richness that evolves every year. And pomegranate: I’m obsessed with its bright flavor, versatile use from breakfast to dinner, and its natural decorative beauty. I couldn’t hide my excitement when I spotted a box of pomegranates at the market recently.

Pomegranates make the prettiest centerpieces, FYI!

Those three things—apples, squash, and pomegranate—make fall feel like the best season. They inspire cozy cooking and vibrant, jewel-toned entertaining.

I usually reserve gin and tonics for warmer months—think my well-loved peach gin and tonic: light, refreshing, and an easy summer staple. Last winter I tried a smoked gin and tonic with herbs like thyme and rosemary, but it felt heavy and out of place on a cold night. I prefer fall cocktails that feel warming in spirit but still refreshing.

Right now the weather can still be unseasonably warm—too hot for hot apple cider but ripe for a transitional drink. Some nights call for a single, well-crafted cocktail rather than a pitcher. You might want a fall-flavored drink that’s not warm, something personal and refreshing. This pomegranate gin and tonic fits exactly that need.
