I’ve never been this excited about a cocktail — this red apple sangria has me completely smitten.

Visually, it’s pure October. Flavor-wise, this red apple cider sangria has become my favorite fall cocktail. I set out to create a signature seasonal drink and this one delivered: balanced, cozy and full of autumn notes.

The classic apple cider sangria has always been a top recipe on the blog — people love it from fall through winter and beyond. I wanted a variation that felt a bit more grown-up while still celebrating apple cider, which I personally prefer to many other fall flavors.

Apple cider instantly evokes crisp air, crunchy leaves, cozy layers and bonfires. Transforming that feeling into a cocktail — with real apple flavor plus warming spices — is a no-brainer.

This version is essentially an adult apple cider sangria: red wine as the base keeps it less sweet and more sophisticated. I sweeten it lightly with maple syrup, and instead of brandy I use a splash of Grand Marnier for a gentle orange note that complements the cider and cinnamon sticks.
It’s delightful.

I also love a cinnamon-sugar rim on the glasses — a small touch that makes each sip feel extra seasonal.

Am I saying it’s better than the original white-wine or rosé-based cider sangria? Not necessarily — I still reach for lighter wines more often — but if you prefer red wine and drinks that aren’t overly sweet, this one will win you over. It’s stayed in my rotation all season long.

Ingredients
- 3 apples sliced
- 4 cinnamon sticks
- 1 standard 750mL chilled bottle pinot noir
- 2 cups cold apple cider
- 1/2 cup Grand Marnier liqueur
- 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
for the rim
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 orange wedge
Instructions
-
Add the sliced apples and cinnamon sticks to the bottom of a pitcher. Pour in the red wine, apple cider, Grand Marnier and maple syrup, then stir to combine. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to let the flavors meld; longer is fine if you prefer.
-
To serve, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon on a plate. Run an orange wedge around the rim of each glass and dip into the cinnamon sugar. Fill glasses with ice, pour the sangria and include some of the fruit in each pour. Enjoy.
