Summer Fridays Vol. 1: Sunny Weekend Outfit Ideas

summer fridays

Summer Fridays is back! If you’re new here, Summer Fridays is our weekly summer coffee-date post every Friday where I share what I’m loving, using, wanting, reading and listening to. It’s meant to inspire your weekend and add a little fun to each summer Friday.

EATING

Two recipes we make almost every week are my grilled asparagus Caesar salad and the grilled vegetable orzo with smashed feta vinaigrette. Both are simple, full of flavor, and the orzo is perfect for weekends because it can be made ahead and served hot or cold.

DRINKING

I’m obsessed with rainbow coconut water spritzers — they’re the prettiest mocktails and great with or without alcohol. If you want a boozy option for a warm evening, the watermelon frosé is a summertime favorite and perfect for frosé season.

MAKING

It’s strawberry season, so I’m all about strawberry crunch salad and strawberry cobbler bars. Fresh berries make everything feel like the best season ever.

BAKING

Celebrating national donut day with strawberry buttermilk sprinkle donuts — they’re a bright, nostalgic treat and so fun to make at home.

READING

I’m reading Golden Girl and I’m already hooked — Elin’s new book is powerful and emotional. If you want more recommendations, check out my full summer reading list and my roundup of everything I read in May.

LISTENING

Our 2021 Summer Fridays kickoff playlist is on repeat — it’s full of feel-good tracks and sets the tone for longer days and warm nights.

WEARING

These almost-orthopedic flip flops have been a revelation — super cushioned and perfect when you’re on your feet all day. I’m also loving C9 Champion tanks for working out or lounging, and a comfortable crew-neck tank that’s become a staple. I didn’t buy maternity clothes this time and expect a smaller summer wardrobe while nursing, but I did pick up a hot pink Lilly dress for a few wedding events and easy nursing access — it’s neon, comfortable, and cheerful.

SHOPPING

If you need a practical home pick, freestanding collapsible folding hampers have been worth every penny — they look nice and make laundry life easier as our family grows.

PACKING

I’m pretending to pack my hospital bag for baby #3 — I haven’t finished it yet, but I’m excited about the new Frida Mom postpartum products. They weren’t around when I had Emilia or Max, and while I’ll have hospital supplies, I’ve stocked up at home for the first days after we return.

SHARING

If you need kitchen inspiration, my kitchen essentials guide has favorite tools and appliances I use all the time.

LOVING

I loved the excerpt from Katie Sturino’s new book Body Talk — Katie’s perspective is honest and empowering. It reminded me of an Armchair Expert episode with Kelly Osbourne, and it brought up how early and persistently outside commentary about weight can be — something I experienced growing up. I feel grateful for a parent who modeled a healthy mindset around food and body image, and I hope I’m doing the same for my kids.
