I tend to crown a new drink “the drink of summer” every time I experiment with seasonal cocktails, and I’m doing it again — this one really is summer in a glass. It’s cooling, icy and full of flavors that work in the heat. A vodka soda with lots of lime is always refreshing; this simply takes that idea and brightens it with a blueberry-lavender syrup.
Flavored vodka sodas are my specialty — I’ve shared cucumber, cherry lime and clementine versions before — and the blueberry-lavender pairing is one of my favorites. I’ve used it in scones, jams, cakes and even mojitos. Lavender brings a soft floral note that complements blueberry’s brightness, creating a lovely summer combination.
The blueberry lavender syrup is the heart of this drink. It’s essentially a simple syrup made with equal parts sugar and water, plus fresh blueberries and a pinch of culinary lavender. It’s quick to make, stores well in the fridge for several days, and can even be used in iced coffee if you’re feeling adventurous.
I like to strain the syrup through a fine mesh once it’s cooled so the lavender petals and blueberry bits are removed. This keeps the syrup smooth, prevents chunks from clogging a straw, and helps it last longer in the refrigerator.
The rest of the cocktail is straightforward: good-quality vodka and club soda. I often use Tito’s for vodka and whatever club soda or seltzer I have on hand. You can use a flavored seltzer if you like, but the syrup should remain the star of the drink.
If you’re serving this at a gathering, make a jar of the mixer by combining syrup and vodka in advance and keeping it chilled. When guests are ready for a drink, pour the vodka-syrup mix over ice and top with soda — don’t premix the soda into a large pitcher, or you’ll lose the effervescence.

Ingredients
Lavender Blueberry Syrup
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup water
- 8 ounces blueberries
- 1 tablespoon dried culinary lavender
Vodka Soda
- 1 to 2 tablespoons lavender blueberry syrup
- 2 ounces vodka
- 4 to 6 ounces club soda, fill to the top
- Fresh blueberries, for garnish
- Sprig of lavender, for garnish
Instructions
Lavender Blueberry Syrup
- Combine sugar, water, blueberries and culinary lavender in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then let the mixture simmer until the blueberries burst. Remove from heat and let cool completely. Strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove lavender and berry solids. Store refrigerated in a sealed container for up to a week.
Vodka Soda
- Fill a glass with ice. Add 1 to 2 tablespoons syrup and 2 ounces vodka, then stir. Top with club soda and stir gently. Garnish with fresh blueberries and a sprig of lavender, then serve.
