Smoky Chipotle Cheddar Twists — Thanksgiving Appetizer Recipe

These smoky cheddar twists are the easiest snack to make this week!

They really only require four ingredients and come together in minutes. Crisp, buttery and full of sharp cheddar, these twists are terrific on their own or served alongside a cheese board or light appetizer. Because they’re airy and not overly filling, they make a great pre-dinner snack without spoiling the main meal.

chili powder and cheddar on puff pastry

I’m often torn about serving an appetizer before a big holiday dinner. Some years I skip it; other years I keep things tiny—a soup shooter or a small cheese plate. The worry is always the same: Thanksgiving is so indulgent that a heavy starter can ruin everyone’s appetite.

Last year I made a spinach artichoke twist star that was a hit, but sometimes even that feels like too much before the meal. These smoky cheddar twists are a lighter option with the same wow factor.

These twists are embarrassingly simple. Start with a sheet of puff pastry and season it with either chipotle chili powder or smoked paprika.

Chipotle chili powder brings noticeable warmth and a lingering heat—delicious if you like spice. Smoked paprika delivers deep smoky flavor without the heat, so choose based on your preference. Both work beautifully.

What makes them work

Use freshly grated sharp cheddar for the best texture and flavor. Press the cheese gently into the pastry so it adheres, then cut the sheet into strips and twist. Any stray shreds that fall onto the pan will crisp up into crunchy, savory bits that you’ll want to snack on.

Puff pastry is at its peak right out of the oven—flaky, buttery and tender—so these are best enjoyed freshly baked. They stay okay for an hour or two, but nothing beats them hot from the oven.

If you want to save time on the day you plan to serve them, prepare the twists ahead: assemble them, refrigerate or freeze, then brush with egg wash and bake when you’re ready. They’re fast, flexible and crowd-pleasing.

These are exactly the kind of easy, satisfying treats you want on a busy day—quick to assemble, bold in flavor, and irresistibly flaky.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed if frozen
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons chipotle chili powder or smoked paprika
  • 6 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, freshly grated
  • 1 large egg + 1 teaspoon water, lightly beaten for egg wash

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Place the puff pastry on the parchment. Evenly sprinkle with chipotle chili powder (spicier) or smoked paprika (more smoky). Top with the grated cheddar and press lightly so the cheese adheres to the dough.
  • Using a pizza cutter, slice the pastry into 1-inch strips. Hold each strip by the ends and gently twist from the center several times. Any cheese that falls onto the parchment will crisp up and become a delicious addition.
  • Brush each twist with the egg wash. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until puffed and golden. Serve immediately for best texture.
