Want to know something a little embarrassing?
I seriously live for school supplies.
Not joking—this time of year always gets me. I walk into Target and want to hide inside, like Joey + Pacey hiding out in a quirky TV moment. I get irrationally excited about sparkly notebooks, gel pens, mechanical pencils, multicolored erasers and folders with unicorns. I often wonder why Lisa Frank never designed something for adults in their twenties—something less obvious but still delightfully over-the-top.
Even though I was the kid who suffered massive anxiety the night before school started—probably way more than necessary—the weeks leading up to the first day were my favorite part of the year. I didn’t even mind coming home from our annual summer trip in August, because it meant shopping for fresh paper and pens.
My mom used to joke, “Giving you a pencil and paper is like giving a serial killer a gun.” Morbid, but not entirely inaccurate. I am a relentless doodler. I doodle on everything: leftover envelopes, bills, pieces of mail. I once covered my paper-bag wrapped textbooks in bubble letters, hearts and squiggles. Nowadays, with so much of life happening digitally, I fill the margins of magazines and phone messages with geometric designs while I talk on the phone or catch up on DVRed episodes of The Hills. Think you can doodle? I’ll take that challenge.
The other night I was pouring bourbon over dark chocolate ice cream in a glass at my dining room table, and it hit me: when did I get so old? I can drink bourbon for dessert, but I don’t buy a new six-pack of neon highlighters every August. Not sure if I love this maturity, but I do love the bourbon floats.
I shared a spiked float a while back that I had for lunch—yes, lunch. We’re big fans of boozy floats in this house. My husband is especially obsessed; they’re basically one of his favorite things. The best part of not heading back to school in September is that bourbon floats remain fair game for midday treats. Adulting has its perks, even if it doesn’t involve glitter pens.
