My husband carved a Pittsburgh Penguins pumpkin! Not only is he incredibly sweet and creative, but he’s also very talented.
He didn’t use a template—he studied the Pens logo and started carving freehand. How impressive is that?

Pretty awesome, right?
I was surprised to discover how many carving kits actually include stencils. We bought a pumpkin carving kit and it was full of intricate templates.
That discovery slightly deflated some childhood illusions. I used to think the pumpkins with identical designs meant those people were exceptionally artistic. Turns out many were using the same stencils I found in the kit.
Cheaters.
I gave it a try myself.

I’m not patient, and this project made that painfully obvious. Using the cheap carving tool felt like torture; at one point I wanted to dig my eyeballs out. From now on I’ll stick to triangle eyes and toothless grins.
I also made BBQ and buffalo chicken pizzas on Joseph’s Lavash wraps.

I got so into finishing them that I forgot to take final photos—use your imagination for how good they looked.
Even though our neighborhood is in a large development, we only had about a dozen trick-or-treaters. That left us with plenty of leftover candy.

My hips aren’t going to lie.
I’m excited it’s November. It’s my birthday month, and it also feels like the right time to start listening to Christmas music without feeling silly.
I must go now—my 36-year-old husband announced he’s watching the animated Horton Hears a Who. We have no children.
Well, he has no children. Sometimes, in moments like this, I could almost say I have one.
