Kick Off Your Holiday Baking: Festive Recipes & Tips

It’s no secret that I love to bake. The holidays are my favorite time to fill the house with the smell of fresh cookies, but this year my cookie list has grown a bit daunting. Below is what I’m planning to make, along with a few memories and notes about each treat.

Last year I made so many cookies that one night we were rushing to a party and, incredibly, Mr. How Sweet was ready before me. That almost never happens. I asked him to assemble a cookie tray and he put together the most spectacular display: cookies piled at least six inches high, looking absolutely irresistible. I love having lots of cookies to bring to parties and to give as gifts — it’s a little bit of Mother Lovett in me.

Now I just have to figure out how to manage my time to make them all. Yikes.

Holiday Christmas Cookie List

  • Chocolate Chip Cookies — a classic that never disappoints.
  • Peanut Butter Blossoms — my all-time favorite holiday cookie.
  • Cut-out Sugar Cookies — these disappear fast in our house; I use tons of sprinkles.
  • Mother Lovett’s Thumbprints — family favorites that keep well in the freezer.
  • Oreo Balls — easy, rich, and addictive.
  • Red Velvet Cake Balls — red velvet cake mixed with cream cheese frosting and dipped in white chocolate.
  • Cookie Dough Truffles — safe-to-eat cookie dough formed into truffles.
  • Soft Gingersnaps — I made these for the first time last year and ended up baking five more batches. Delicious.
  • Festive Chocolate Covered Oreos — easy to decorate and always a hit.
  • Festive Chocolate Covered Pretzel Rods — inspired by Sabrina, these were a hit last year.
  • Big, Soft Sugar Cookies — perfect for anyone who loves Lofthouse-style cookies.
  • Mother Lovett’s Butterballs — my mom adores these and they remind me of her.
  • Salty Chocolate Turtle Cookies — great mix of sweet and salty.
  • Red Velvet Cookies — a twist on the classic red velvet flavor.
  • Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars — cookies in bar form, perfect for gifting.
  • Chocolate Fudge Mint Blossoms — mint and chocolate are a holiday match made in heaven.
  • Mother Lovett’s Orange Cookies — cake-like cookies with bright orange flavor that my mom loves.
  • Seven Layer Bars — also called Congo bars by some; I never measure and always make the layers super thick.
  • Peanut Butter and Jelly Cookies — playful take on a childhood classic.

I honestly don’t know where I’ll store all of these cookies (besides the freezing garage) or how I’ll stop myself from eating most of them before December 20th. And that list doesn’t even include the new cookie recipes I plan to share throughout December.

How will I manage my time? How will I stay sane? How will I fit into my pants? Those are the real questions.

But mostly I want to hear from you:

  • What am I missing?
  • Which cookie can you never resist?
  • What cookie feels most like Christmas to you?
  • Do you make a list like this, and if so, what’s on it?

If you have a recipe you love, please share it. I’m always looking for new favorites to add to the pile.
