I ignored everything bagels for a long time.

Honestly, I avoided the whole “everything” craze for years. I blamed it on onions — raw onions felt harsh to me as a kid, so I stayed away. Over time I realized onions are foundational to so many delicious flavors, and I had to admit I’d been missing out.
Then I tasted an everything bagel and it changed my life. The mix of sesame, onion, poppy seeds and salt is so compelling when it’s all together. It’s simple and bold at once.

Speaking of bagels, I have a bone to pick with Dunkin’: do most people not like their bagels truly toasted? Whenever I order, they’re barely warm and lack any golden crisp. For years I’ve been asking for “well done” — I want brown, crunchy edges — and it still arrives lukewarm. It’s a small thing, but when I want toast, I want toast.

Back to the hummus: yes, this recipe is meant to capture that everything-bagel flavor in a spreadable dip. It’s an everything hummus made with white beans, roasted garlic, sesame oil and a shower of everything seasoning on top. The hummus itself is silky and flavorful, but the seasoning really sings when it’s sprinkled on the surface rather than mixed in completely.
Leaving the seasoning mostly on top means each dip hits with the crunchy, toasty notes you want from an everything bagel. It’s also prettier — and in my world, pretty food is a bonus.

Ingredients
- 3 cups cooked cannellini or great northern beans, or 2 cans, drained and rinsed
- 6 tablespoons olive oil plus more for drizzling
- 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
- 1 whole head of roasted garlic
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
everything seasoning
- 2 tablespoons dried minced onion
- 2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
- 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
- 1 tablespoon dried minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon flaked sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- crackers for serving
Instructions
-
Combine the dried minced onion, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried garlic, flaked sea salt and black pepper in a small bowl. Toss to mix; set aside.
-
Add the beans and roasted garlic to a food processor. Pulse and blend until the beans begin to puree, about 2–3 minutes. With the processor running, stream in the olive oil and toasted sesame oil until the mixture is as smooth as you like, scraping the sides as needed. Season with salt to taste.
-
Spoon the hummus into a serving bowl, drizzle with extra olive oil and generously sprinkle the everything seasoning over the top. Serve immediately with crackers or vegetables.
-
Note: this is best if you enjoy the bold flavors of “everything” seasoning — it’s the star of the dish.

Cracker stack! Layer crackers and hummus like a little savory cake — definitely worth trying.
