Grapefruit Daiquiri Recipe: Refreshing Citrus Cocktail Guide

The grapefruit daiquiri has become my go-to drink.

This cocktail is so good.

I’m in a funny phase of life where some friends have older kids and others don’t have children at all. That means when I try to meet for coffee, lunch or happy hour with my baby Max in tow, conversation can be a challenge—I’m often chasing him around instead of chatting. I’m not about to spend time in crowded indoor play spaces at the mall with a newborn. This is my first child; he’s practically wrapped in bubble wrap most of the time. Maybe if there’s a second kid someday, the rules will change—but for now, I’m keeping things simple.

So, to be honest, I’m on the hunt for a great warm-weather cocktail that I can mix in a pitcher and bring along on neighborhood walks as a friendly icebreaker. A pitcher of something tasty might be the perfect way to meet neighbors in the same life stage, so when a mom meltdown hits I can walk over with a pitcher rather than hop in the car and make a Target run. (Obviously I wouldn’t actually walk around with rum in a public place.)

Target has become my second home lately. It’s filling my life with small comforts—like an ever-growing nail polish collection—even if it’s also the reason I can’t find the time to do much else.

Part of me jokes that I’m begging for friends who are in the same season, but it’s a real feeling on days when I send video snaps to internet friends and pretend we’re clinking glasses. It takes me back to childhood phone antics: my cousin and I used to try to pass snacks through the phone, convinced we were sharing food. We spent hours on the phone even though we lived close to each other and went to school together. I still remember one of my parents’ old phones having cereal pieces stuck in the speaker. Old phones are weirdly nostalgic—call them “real phones” if you like; apparently my iPhone is something different.

I’m a huge fan of grapefruit—give me everything grapefruit and I’m happy. I like it plain with a spoon, not covered in sugar or salt, though I also love sweet grapefruit treats. Candied grapefruit slices are a favorite. Maybe a bowl of those would be an easier way to make friends than wandering the neighborhood with a drink.

For spring, I wanted to share a refreshing grapefruit daiquiri. It’s bright and balanced: white rum, freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, a splash of lime, maraschino cherry juice for depth, and simple syrup to round it out. A touch of coconut milk is optional for creaminess, and a splash of seltzer adds a little fizz. This recipe is easy to scale if you want to make a pitcher.
