Hello — we’re doing this.

This recipe feels right for a Monday because of the caffeine, but it’s also perfect for a slow weekend morning — a comforting cup you can sip while you scroll the news feed. (By “read the paper” I mean checking Instagram, Snapchat and whatever news app is blowing up.)
My mom still reads the paper, though. She might be the only one.

I am completely in love with this drink–breakfast hybrid. Oatmeal isn’t usually my go-to, but this? This is a hug in a mug.

I first spotted the oatmeal latte in an article on Bon Appétit late last summer and have been dying to try it ever since. It finally happened, and it lived up to everything I hoped for.
This drink answers the question people made about whether to sip or scoop — the answer is both. It’s a caffeine boost combined with brown sugar oatmeal. If you love breakfast, this might be everything you never knew you wanted.

The technique is simple: whisk old-fashioned rolled oats with steamed milk, brown sugar and a pinch of salt. Salt really is key — it brightens the sweetness. Scoop the creamy oatmeal into your mug and top it with a shot (or two) of espresso.

When everything comes together it looks like a drink — and you can sip it for that first jolt of coffee — but it’s best enjoyed with a spoon. You get spoonfuls of brown-sugary oatmeal, creamy milk and rich espresso all at once. It’s like breakfast and coffee in one bowl.
I just can’t.

The oatmeal latte is finished with a sprinkling of granola for crunch. It’s not granola on a liquid — it’s crunchy topping on cappuccino-flavored oatmeal. I used a maple-nut crunch granola that had cashews, and the texture and flavor were perfect with the oat-and-espresso base.
Try it if you love coffee and oatmeal. Tweak the sweetness and coffee strength to suit your preference — more or less brown sugar, a single or double shot, or even flavored syrup if you like that. It may take a try or two to find your ideal balance, but it’s worth experimenting — especially since the early attempts are delicious too.
Now I’m going to make one of these and tell you how much I love you. Sometimes caffeine makes me feel giddy.
