A satsuma cocktail means only one thing: citrus season has arrived.

It really is the most wonderful time of the year: citrus season. When satsumas, clementines, blood oranges and grapefruit appear, I’m ready to use them in every possible way.

Over the holidays we often open a bottle of bubbly, but I like to mix things up. I love a well-made mimosa—especially with grapefruit—but I wanted a satsuma cocktail that let these sweet, fragrant oranges shine in a different way.
Give me satsumas and clementines and all the citrus; I’ll take lemon and lime on the side, too. These fruits are versatile and bright, and they make cocktails feel festive and fresh.

For Christmas Eve and Christmas Day drinks we usually stick with champagne, but I also love seasonal cocktails like mistletoe margaritas and holiday mimosas. This satsuma cocktail is another great option—bright, slightly sweet and bubbly.
This drink works two ways: with vodka or with gin. I first had a memorable champagne-and-vodka cocktail years ago and expected vodka to be my go-to here. But gin adds a lovely botanical note that pairs beautifully with satsuma juice. Use whichever spirit you prefer.

The recipe includes a touch of simple syrup, which you can adjust based on how sweet your satsumas are and how sweet your bubbly tastes. It’s forgiving—feel free to add or subtract a bit until it’s balanced for you. The result is refreshing and light, and it’s festive enough to drink on Christmas morning if you want.

Part of the fun is adding fresh satsuma segments directly into the glass. They soak up the champagne and add texture—sturdier than navel orange wedges—so you can sip and snack at the same time. It’s almost like a mini satsuma sangria in each glass.

This bright, bubbly cocktail pairs perfectly with a holiday playlist and a cozy morning—or it can act as a festive aperitif before dinner. It’s simple to make and easy to customize to your taste.
