Put a milkshake on the menu for dinner tonight!

Look at how light and fluffy the chocolate whipped cream is on top of these shakes. It’s practically pillow-soft. Once you try this, plain whipped cream feels like a missed opportunity. Grab a straw!

I really wanted a luxurious chocolate shake for Valentine’s Day — something rich and chocolatey without the effort of baking. Shakes are perfect when you want dessert in five minutes: deep cocoa flavor, creamy texture, and no oven required.

With so much recipe testing for the book, we’ve been eating at home more than ever. That led me to a homemade burger, fries and milkshake phase — everything tastes amazing when it’s homemade. I rarely order a shake out, but when you make them at home alongside a great burger and fries, it just works. For Valentine’s Day, swap the fancy steak for a casual, cozy burger night with indulgent shakes.

I love the idea of that for Valentine’s — much better than a plate of filet with blue cheese sauce.

One of my favorite recent Valentine’s memories: a year after Eddie and I started dating, I woke up at 5am to go to the gym. It was snowing hard and my car slid sideways into someone’s yard. I called him, crying, and he came to help. After freeing the car we both skipped work because the snow was so bad and ended up making a huge spur-of-the-moment weekday breakfast at his apartment. It was unexpectedly perfect — simple, silly, and memorable. The only downside: I’m pretty sure it involved turkey bacon, which definitely ruined the romance a little.

We didn’t have chocolate shakes that day, but we should have. This year I’ll probably make heart-shaped treats for Max (I’ve become such a sucker for cliches) and do burger night for Eddie — complete with obnoxiously good milkshakes. Maybe chocolate-covered pretzels on top, and definitely flaky sea salt for me. Don’t tell Eddie about the sea salt — he’ll freak. I’ll take all the salty chocolate, thanks.
