I love everything about this summer Friday.
EATING
There is nothing like the appetite after having a baby. I’m craving my summer tomato picnic toast and mojito watermelon wedges, and I’m dreaming about making grilled filet and potato skewers with rosemary chimichurri for the next cookout.
BAKING
The lactation cookies are a must. They’ve earned nearly 2,000 five-star reviews for good reason — they’re delicious and effective. They’re also a thoughtful gift for a friend who is expecting or has just welcomed a baby.
MAKING
I’m planning to bake the almond crumb cake this weekend, inspired by the delicate flavors of almond wedding cake.
DRINKING
I haven’t had an alcoholic drink since the baby, but I’m readying an Aperol Spritz for when the time is right. I’m also craving a watermelon frosé — perfect for hot days.
LISTENING
Right around when you were reading Summer Fridays, I was in the middle of giving birth and playing a playlist I put together for the occasion. We listened to it all day and into the night—Jordan arrived at 12:07 a.m.—and the nurses and midwives kept commenting on how much they liked it. It was created for us in the delivery room but it quickly became a favorite that I want to share.
READING
Next up on my reading list is The Other Black Girl. I’m hoping to start it early next week once things settle down around here.
CELEBRATING
We’re celebrating my brother’s wedding today. It was postponed last year, so it feels extra special that it’s happening now—even with a newborn in the mix. We’re in full wedding mode as you read this.
LOVING
I can’t say enough about Liquid I.V. It was a lifesaver during pregnancy, helpful through labor and delivery, and invaluable now while breastfeeding. I often pick it up at Costco where it’s frequently on sale.
WATCHING
Recently I did an Instagram Live with Robin Kall Homonoff to talk about Everyday Dinners — you can find that recording on my Instagram. I also joined the Gush and Grow podcast for a conversation about food and family.
SHOPPING
I finally bought a nap dress this week. It’s lightweight, airy for summer, and works well for breastfeeding — I expect to live in it all season.
WEARING
We’ve welcomed a baby! I’ll share a favorites post in a few weeks, but for now I’m using the Solly baby wrap (which I used with Max and Emilia) and the Artipoppe carrier. Both have been reliable and comfortable.
APPRECIATING
I’m deeply grateful for the nurses and midwives at the hospital. Their care was extraordinary and emotional to reflect on. Having a midwife on call made this birth a wonderful experience, and I’m in awe of their work.
