If we’re not putting apple butter in our cocktail, are we even celebrating October?

Probably not — so here’s an apple butter cocktail to fix that.

We have an absurd amount of apple butter in our house. Eddie eats it on toast almost daily and always comes home with the biggest jars he can find from local farms. I like it too, just not quite as obsessively.
But I knew apple butter would be fantastic in a cocktail.

Apple season is the best. We go through apple butter and cider, and everyone (well, not Emilia yet!) eats an apple every single day. This time of year really gives me life.
I think that’s the official 2018 sentiment.

This cocktail is both delicious and ridiculously simple:
Shake apple butter and bourbon with ice. I like to add a pinch of cinnamon for a touch of warmth and fall spice, but that’s optional.
Strain into a glass and top with chilled ginger ale or ginger beer. That’s it.

Ginger ale will give a sweeter, lighter fizz, while ginger beer brings more spice and bite. Apple butter already sweetens the drink, so ginger beer can help balance the sweetness — but if you crave that nostalgic ginger ale taste, go for it. Either way, it’s a win.

A cinnamon-sugar rim is a lovely finishing touch, adding aroma and a little extra sweetness. Garnish with fresh figs for a pretty, seasonal presentation.
This is a cozy fall cocktail that’s still served over ice — which makes it one of my favorites. Make it soon.
