Bacon-Wrapped Scallops for the Holidays: Irresistible Appetizer Recipe

I’ll tell you a little secret.

You can buy frozen bacon-wrapped scallops at warehouse stores like Sam’s Club and Costco, and likely at other retailers. That’s a convenient shortcut, but making them yourself is more rewarding—and they taste better.

The extra effort is minimal, and the satisfaction of serving a homemade appetizer is worth it.

I start by buying a few pounds of fresh scallops.

I season them simply with salt, pepper, and a little garlic powder. This lets the scallops’ natural sweetness shine while the bacon adds savory contrast.

I cut each bacon slice in half or in thirds, depending on scallop size. I prefer applewood-smoked bacon for the flavor, but use whatever you like.

Wrap a piece of bacon around each scallop and secure it with a toothpick. The toothpick makes them easy for guests to pick up and eat without utensils.

I broil them for about 10 minutes total—5 minutes on one side, then flip and broil another 5 minutes. Since ovens vary, test one or two first to find the perfect timing so the scallops stay tender and the bacon crisps up.

When done, the scallops are cooked through and tender, while the bacon is crisp and flavorful.

This takes only a little more effort than heating frozen scallops, but the homemade version impresses guests—and it might earn you an extra compliment or two.

Sometimes “guests” just means my husband and me—we’ll happily eat these for dinner. You should try them too.

Enjoy!
