Homemade Cheddar Whole Wheat Crackers Recipe

I realize that sharing these crackers right after the red velvet cookies might feel like a letdown, but I like to share every kitchen adventure — even the humble ones.

This was my first attempt at making crackers, and while they may not win any beauty contests, they turned out hearty, crunchy and pleasantly cheesy — much better than they look.

I’m not usually a cracker person; I tend to favor chocolate and peanut butter. But Mr. How Sweet is the opposite — a devoted crunchy snack fan who often reaches for pretzel sticks after dinner. These crackers were an immediate hit in our house, especially since they’re made entirely from whole wheat. They pair perfectly with big chunks of gouda or a smear of pumpkin butter.

Easy Cheesy Whole Wheat Crackers

Ingredients:

  • 1 3/4 cups whole wheat pastry flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup warm water, plus 1–2 tablespoons if needed
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus extra for sprinkling

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Whisk together the whole wheat pastry flour, baking soda and salt. Stir in the Parmesan.
  3. Add the olive oil and 1/2 cup warm water, mixing until a dough forms. Add a tablespoon or two more water if the dough is too dry.
  4. Lightly flour a baking sheet or spray it with cooking spray. Roll the dough out as thin as possible. Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, score the dough into squares — the crackers will separate when they bake.
  5. Sprinkle more Parmesan on top, then bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the crackers are golden brown and crisp.

Have you made crackers at home? These simple, whole wheat crackers are a great place to start — satisfying, quick to make, and easy to customize with different cheeses or seasonings. Once you’ve mastered these, try experimenting with more complex flavors and techniques.
