Cheesy Whole Wheat Crackers Recipe for Homemade Snacks

I realize sharing these crackers right after posting red velvet cookies might feel like a letdown, but I share all my kitchen experiments here — wins and humble beginnings alike.

This was my first time making crackers, and to my surprise they turned out hearty, crunchy and cheesy — not at all like cardboard. They look rustic and simple, but the flavor and texture were genuinely satisfying.

I’m not usually a big cracker person; I tend to prefer more indulgent snacks. My partner, however, loves crunchy snacks. He often claims he’s too full for dessert and then munches on pretzel sticks as if it’s his second meal — so these crackers were a hit at our house.

They have the added benefit of being 100% whole wheat, which made me feel justified piling them high with thick slices of gouda and a smear of pumpkin butter.

Easy Cheesy Whole Wheat Crackers

Ingredients:

  • 1 3/4 cups whole wheat pastry flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup warm water, plus 1–2 tablespoons if needed
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, plus extra for sprinkling

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking soda and salt. Stir in the Parmesan cheese.
  3. Add the olive oil and 1/2 cup warm water, mixing until a dough forms. Add an extra tablespoon or two of water if the dough seems too dry.
  4. Lightly spray a baking sheet with cooking spray and dust with a bit of flour. Roll the dough out very thin on the prepared sheet.
  5. Use a pizza cutter to score the dough into squares; the crackers will separate as they bake.
  6. Sprinkle additional Parmesan over the top, then bake for 10–12 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.

Have you made crackers at home? These were an easy, satisfying starting point — light, crunchy and full of cheese. Now that I’ve mastered this simple version, I’m curious to try a few more involved recipes with seeds, herbs or layered flavors.
