Since it’s almost summer and spring has long passed, with the sun barely visible since March 21st and so much rain that I’ve considered inflating an inner tube to float to the nearest island, I’ve officially declared it milkshake time.
Nectarine milkshake time. With mint. Nectarine and mint—sounds odd, right? But it really works. Think Bath and Body Works’ nectarines-and-mint-scented soap: fruity, cool, and unexpectedly refreshing. That’s the idea behind this shake.
I was nudged into making it by that very soap. I found nectarines on sale and grabbed some, even though fresh mint wasn’t on sale and April in Pittsburgh hasn’t exactly been kind to herbs. Instead of bright green sprigs, the mint at the store looked tired and a little worse for wear—brown, wilted, and shriveled, like it had a rough night.
Still, I pressed on. If the mint looked like it had been through the wringer, so be it—sometimes the flavor survives even when the appearance doesn’t. I made this oddball milkshake after a full day of searching for nice mint leaves, and because you’re my favorite person, I tested it first to spare you a terrible sip. I would have bravely finished the whole thing if it had tasted awful, vowing to stop washing my hands just to keep the memory of it with me. Thankfully, that wasn’t necessary.
The shake turned out delightful: fruity, cool, bright, and invigorating. Fresh nectarines bring a juicy sweetness, while a small amount of mint adds a crisp lift without overpowering the fruit. It’s an uncomplicated summer treat that feels light and refreshing—perfect for warm days or anytime you want something both creamy and lively.
Maybe if I had more friends you wouldn’t have to hear about all my little kitchen experiments, but until then, consider this your invitation to try something unexpectedly tasty.
