Chocolate Cherry Almond Butter Recipe — Rich Homemade Spread

I’ve never been able to get into almond butter.

Why? It’s simply not sweet enough for my taste.

And spare me the advice about learning to “savor” its natural sweetness — that’s the same thing people say about vegetables, and I don’t buy it.

The only way I’ll find vegetables sweet is if they’re smothered in chocolate fudge.

I’m sure if I mixed almond butter with a big pour of chocolate fudge, I’d enjoy it too.

Still, I really like almonds, so I decided to try making my own almond butter and flavoring it to suit my palate.

Chocolate Cherry Almond Butter

Plain almond butter wasn’t going to cut it, so I spiced things up. I stirred in cocoa powder and a handful of dried cherries — I used cherries from Frog Hollow Farm, which are wonderfully flavorful.

At first I thought I might need to add maple syrup or another sweetener, but the dried cherries provided enough sweetness on their own.

Homemade nut butter

I love making nut butters at home. Most of the time I already have the ingredients on hand, and it only takes a few minutes to prepare.

Making your own is more economical, which leaves more room in the budget for the things you love — for me, that sometimes means splurging on shoes.

Would I trade a few months of food for a pair of Christian Louboutins? Maybe — but for now I’ll settle for a jar of chocolate cherry almond butter.
